Hi there,
I’ve been jamming with YouTube Videos but i’m confused that for example playing a c minor blues scale over a c major progression seems to work.
I would have thought that an Am Blues over the c would have been the go to. Perhaps its something to do with 7th chords?
If anybody can help me with this it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
It’s really all down to the style of music. Technically you could make an argument that minor over major creates more dissonance and clashes. With blues music however, that’s kind of the point. People like the sound and we’ve all got so used to hearing it that it just sounds normal.
This subject could be an entire book by itself but the bottom line is if you think it sounds OK then it’s OK. Many people play minor pentatonic over major blues progressions.
Many pop and rock songs also do the same, simply because we’re used to the sound so it doesn’t sound out of place.
The more up tempo and the more “happier” the blues is sounding, that’s when we might think more about major scale soloing or a mix of the two.
