The TAB notation using staffs throws me some. I understand the fret board diagrams completely, the staff (e.g., Exercise 1) less. Do these staffs mean to signify the beginning or root note of the scale and, if so why are the same numbers assigned different locations on the staff? I could definitely be missing an obvious chunk here 🙂

TAB notation represents strings and fret numbers.
The bottom line is the thick E string, the top line is the thin E string, the rest follow the standard string tuning. The numbers are the frets you play the note on for each string.
