I know the key is D, but what scale is the guitarist using??? I love the song and would like to improvise to it, but I’m having trouble.
I’ve only had a quick listen but it just sounds like D major to me.
There’s probably a few outside / passing notes thrown in but I don’t see any problem with just using D major or just D major pentatonic scale.
If what you are doing sounds wrong then it might be that you need to try a few typical country licks and perhaps pay attention to chord tones. Can you record your solo and post a link for me to hear?
Thanks, I tried noodling around the D major scale, and it sounds good. I must have missed some notes or just written them down wrong.
My first improvising in something other than minor pentatonic! I knew where to go to get a diagram! 🙂
You could also try different major pentatonic scales over each chord. This can sometimes help with the chord changes sounding a bit better.
I can’t remember the chords, was it D, F#m, G, A?
If so, try this..
D major pentatonic over the D
F# minor pentatonic over the F#
G major pentatonic over the G
A major pentatonic over the A
This will effectively be the same thing as playing the D major scale over the whole chord progression but should keep most of the chord tones closer to each chord.
