Hi Lee. I remember reading your thoughts on how to play a scale that doesn’t start on the root note, it can’t find it – if memory serves, you start in the lowest note, go to root, then …. I can’t remember how it works from there.

I guess it’s all subjective but in my opinion a scale should always be visualised around its root, it doesn’t necessarily have to start from it. There’s a difference between using a scale and practising a scale. When used in music it could start from anywhere, just depends on the situation. We get to this stage by tons of practice.
So to answer your question, when practising, always start on the root, work back and then forward again, or vice versa depending on whether ascending or descending a scale. Here’s an example.
