hello
i always see people on youtube teaching to play power chords in verse of hey joe (second chord, first being with the thumb over the neck)
my question is why not play them like that, isnt that more hendrix style? i believe chord should be D
there must be some(way outta here..)… i mean some reason why do they teach it like that, with power chords? or did i see wrong people on youtube?
here are examples:
here’s what they teach: https://ibb.co/4Ppkxq9
what i think is better: https://ibb.co/Wzz7zBj
can you tell my why no one teaches the second way?
I’m no Hendrix expert I’m afraid but personally I wouldn’t take too much notice of the various methods. Some are designed purposely to make it easier for beginners, while some others are just plain wrong.
Hendrix’s style was just that, his style. Just because his thumb is always hooked over, it doesn’t necessarily mean he’s playing the note. A lot of the time he might be skipping that string or possibly muting it.
If you listen closely to the song you should be able to hear if he’s playing something like the chord in your second link. This is D/A and should be quite distinctive.
Your fist link is just a power chord (5th). My feeling is that’s probably not the best choice, Hendrix sound is normally more filled out than that from what I can remember (I haven’t listened for many years). I would think an ordinary D bar chord would be better, something like this.
E: x
B: 7
G: 7
D: 7
A: 5
E: x
Also, you are talking about two songs.. Hey Joe and All along the watch tower. What one are you trying to figure out? If I get a chance I’ll try to take a listen and see if I can figure out what he’s playing. No guarantee but I could try.
