What Chords are best to play changing from the key of E to the key of D?

Hard to say, a number of things could work but the most obvious to me would be a secondary dominant. The V chord of D is A(7). A is the IV of E so try playing A or A7 to lead into the D.
You could also try dropping down chromatically, e.g, E/Eb/D, or an abrupt change straight to D.
Give them a go and see how you get on.
