HELLO recently i’ve been getting into more blues things on piano and guitar, I wanted to know how to form progressions over minor and major blues scale.
Most typical blues progressions are based on the I-IV-V chords. In the key of E this would be E, A and B for major blues.
For minor blues it could be Em, Am, Bm.
Often (but not always) the V chord will be played as a 7th, i.e. B7. The V7 could be used in a minor or major blues progression.
Dominant blues might use 7ths or 9ths) for the IV and V and sometimes on all three. E.g, E7, A7, B7. There’s no hard and fast rule.
There can be many types of blues progressions but mostly they are based on the I-IV-V chords. Other progressions that use more than three chords can be quite varied. The best thing to do for these is to learn as many songs as you can, depending on how far you want to go. Some of the books in the “Blue you can use” series by John Ganapes give a lot of examples of different chord progressions and soloing idea. They’re quite good for this sort of thing, worth owning of you’re into this style. Also might be worth checking out the Levi Clay blues series on Lick Library, I think he covers quite a bit on blues progressions.
