Hi Lee,
I just bought your book which is very good. Iam interested in jazz music, not because Iam deeply in love with jazz music, but because I admire the musical knowledge and technique that jazzers have. Could you please direct me to a source which deals with parallel major/minors and sub-dominants and how they are used? This is not covered in your book , for understandable reasons, but I would like to fill this gap in my knowledge and be able to apply these concepts to the music I really do love.
Many thanks.
I’m not sure what to recommend as I don’t have too many books on jazz, and those that I do own, I’ve only browsed through them quickly as I only have a small interest in traditional jazz.
I’ve heard good things about the The Jazz Theory Book by Mark Levene so that might be worth checking out.
Probably the best place to start though would be the website http://www.jazzguitar.be
There’s tons of free stuff on there and it’s a great site with a large forum.
Get a jazz Real Book if you don’t already have one and learn as many songs as you can, including the common jazz standards and try to analyse them. The more of them you learn the more you will start to notice the commonalities and make some sense of what jazzers do. Between learning songs and the above mentioned website I think you’ll find most of what you want to know.
