Now I am confused I too thought you mean do not pay attention to the box shapes. I read your instructions the same was as him ! Is learning them optional or not to do your method
thankyou
I’d recommend both but if you only choose one then I’d say it’s better to go with my method (for want of a better word). The main thing is to learn the notes on the fretboard as best you can and learn to just see the minor pentatonic scale for what it is – five notes and nothing more. All the five positions do is organise those notes into six string sections along the fretboard. You can organise them any how you like but the more you break them down, the more fluent your playing will be.
Watch any guitarist on Youtube, SRV, Clapton or whoever. You are not going to see them simply moving around the neck going from one scale position to another. They move around in a way that looks almost random, it could be on one string, two strings, three – could be moving up, down, sideways or diagonally. This ability comes from knowing where you are at all times, knowing how you got there and looking for where you might go next.
It doesn’t matter how you go about it, it’s all the same notes, it’s just how you mentally map it all out. Trying to play like this thinking purely about the five fixed positions would be very difficult.
“Knowing your own roadmap”
Yes, that’s also very important – don’t waste too much time practising things you’ll never use.
Yeah playing all over the fretboard, it’s like driving a car. You need to know where you want to go, where you’ve been already, be aware of all the other cars (notes) that are around you, when to change lanes, when to go faster, when to slow down. It all comes with time and practice and knowing your own road map.
