btw i’m a BEGINNER- never played or touched a guitar before and here i am starting. when i depress the b string, third fret and i strum the strings 1-3 (while still pressing down the other string) it sounds weird. and if i just strum on the b string (which is also the string i am pressing down on) it’s sorta like a “pluck” sound. like i don’t know if it’s supposed to sound like that? is it common sense that it’ll sound like that? am i doing something wrong? i don’t know what i’m doing honestly. i’d just like some clarification please.
Difficult to really know without seeing or hearing you. The fact you’re an absolute beginner, what you’re hearing might be normal. The most likely of reasons is that you are not pressing hard enough, you aren’t close enough to the fret or you are accidentally touching other strings without realising.
If the guitar is too cheap or badly setup then the above problems are made even worse. Total beginners usually have a hard time getting a clean sound from the strings unless they press down really quite hard. This becomes easier as you get used to it and build callouses or slightly harder skin in your finger tips.
Fresh, inexperienced finger tips are very soft so when pressed on a string they can act a bit like a soft sponge, forcing the need to press very hard and can be quite painful. Moving the finger much closer to the fret will help with this.
In all honesty, if you are a complete beginner and struggling then it’s really a good idea to have at least one or two lessons or get help from somebody that already plays because they might spot a basic flaw in what you are doing and advise you how to correct it.
