I write my own material, Rock/Pop based – when i check the chords ive used, they never line up with the right key. So I have difficulty choosing the right scale to solo over it with. I end up choosing a relative minor or major pentatonic and spend time listening to my playing to see if what i have played is interesting, then leaving it. Is there an easy way to choose the majority of the chords i am playing, choose a scale, then alter the chords that don’t belong to that scale and change them, how would i go about that?
I’m not quite understanding what you are asking to be honest. Any chance of an example?
Technically you should be able to do either, change chords to suit the scale or change your soloing ideas to suit the chords, you might just need a better understanding of the chords you are using.
If you are happy with the chord progression then I would think it’s best to figure out different soloing options first. Combining chord tones and arpeggio ideas along with your pentatonics should be able to work with most chord progressions generally speaking.
